The LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 2:18 PM EDT.
On Saturday afternoon, the Last Quarter Moon occurs as the Sun in Leo forms a square with the Moon in Taurus. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to a crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us–and what doesn’t–in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again.
This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. What revelations did you have last week? What did they mean for you? What can be done now?
This phase of the Moon occurs at 12 degrees and 19 minutes of Taurus square the Sun at 12 degrees and 19 minutes of Leo, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 10 to 14 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.
The LUNAR ECLIPSE occurred on Friday, July 27, 2018, at 4:20 PM EDT.
On Friday afternoon, a Full Moon occurred when the Leo Sun opposed the Moon in Aquarius. The Full Moon is a time of culmination and the promise of fulfillment of that which was started at the New Moon. It is an emotional time—a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships.
This Full Moon is a total Lunar Eclipse. A Lunar eclipse is an especially potent lunation — in this case a potent Full Moon. Lunar eclipses are relationship-oriented. The “crisis” that these eclipses tend to elicit is a crisis of lack–a time when we suddenly realize a great need or want. The impact of the crisis can act to sever a relationship–it’s possible. But it can also bring two people together with a sudden awareness of a great need for each other. Although Lunar eclipses are more relationship-oriented than Solar eclipses, they are not always about relationships between two people. They can trigger awareness of need in other areas of our lives, such as our relationship to work, to our health and bodies, and so forth. This is a time when matters come to light–things that have been brewing under the surface.
Lunar Eclipses are about relationships and polarities. With the Leo-Aquarius axis involved, this Lunar Eclipse presses us to look more closely at our needs, lacks, and wants in our lives. The Leo-Aquarius polarity deals with the balance between all that is personal (Leo) and all that is impersonal (Aquarius). The energy of Leo is creative self-expression and the boost to the individual ego that we receive through pleasure and romance, while Aquarius rules the group, more impersonal friendships, and objectivity.
This Full Moon urges us to strike a balance between romance and friendship, and between expressing ourselves in personal and impersonal ways. The Leo Sun is proud and intensely individual—not content with simply being just one of the team. The Aquarius Moon, while individualistic as well, values the team. The Full Moon illuminates this conflict. Some sort of crisis (which can be a crisis of consciousness) or sudden awareness of a lack in our lives provides us with a golden opportunity to explore our emotional needs within the context of the house polarity where the eclipse occurs in our natal charts. Relationships may be challenged, broken, or strengthened dramatically at this time. Our discovery is emotionally charged and dramatic. Epiphanies are likely at this time as we become acutely aware of our lack. This understanding can propel us into positive action. Read more about the Lunar Eclipse here.
This eclipse formed a square to Uranus, and there can be a sense of surprise, shock, or frustration involved with our emotional discoveries. Certainly, there can be a strong urge—or need—to break free from old patterns, and the temptation may be to make a stand or force the issue. The Moon aligns with retrograde Mars, and it can be an especially revealing time as it’s likely to pull up unrest, resentment, and buried frustrations. There can be a real desire to master a situation. It’s a good idea to be open to possibilities while attempting to put aside those things that won’t serve us well if magnified. Finalizing plans should probably be saved for a later date and we should watch for too-quick decisions and actions, but paying close attention to what’s illuminated now makes sense. Through the events or the tensions of this time, we can ultimately get to a better understanding of ourselves, and particularly of our desires.
This phase of the Moon occurred at 4 degrees and 45 minutes of Aquarius forming an opposition with the Sun at 4 degrees and 45 minutes of Leo, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 0 to 10 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)
The Sun is in Leo; Mercury is in Leo; Venus is in Virgo; Mars is in Aquarius.
The Sun is in Leo from July 22-August 23. In Leo, the Sun is proud, outgoing, and playful. The Leo Sun is intensely individual—not content with simply being just one of the team. It’s time to shine, add a touch of color and drama to our lives, and perform. Like the flowers and fruit of the season–blossoming and ripened–this is a time when we want to enjoy ourselves and express ourselves. We are more generous and grand in our gestures and attitudes. On the shadow side, we can also be self-centered and vain.
Mercury is in Leo from June 29-September 5. When Mercury is in Leo, our thinking is more confident and grand. The focus is now on the goal–and the grander a goal the better! The details may not be quite as important now. We are more expressive, even theatrical and given to speech-giving and story-telling under this influence. We are also more convincing and persuasive, as we exude confidence when we speak or write. We may not listen as well as we normally do under Mercury in Leo.
Venus is in Virgo from July 9-August 6. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. Besides our romantic natures, what we decide to buy and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle is ruled by whether or not things make sense. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
Mars is in Aquarius from May 16-August 12 and September 10-November 15. Dynamic yet erratic energy levels, achieving our goals through hit or miss tactics, and impersonal expression of anger are characteristics of Mars in Aquarius. We are team players–cooperative and less concerned about personal power. We are attracted to unconventional methods and tend to approach problems from an intellectual, detached perspective.
Saturn transits Capricorn from December 19/20, 2017, to March 21, 2020; and then finishes up its transit from July 1 to December 17, 2020. Read about Saturn’s transit through Capricorn here.
Jupiter entered Scorpio on October 10th, 2017, and will remain in the sign until November 8th, 2018. Read about Jupiter in Scorpio transit here.
Uranus entered Taurus on May 15, 2018, and will transit Taurus until November 6, 2018, and then from March 6, 2019, to 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn how to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. We’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle. There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. We’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money are likely. Income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011, and will transit Aries until May 15, 2018, and then from November 6, 2018, to March 6, 2019. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Virgo from July 9-August 6. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just “being there” for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers’ reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues. As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worried and anxious.
This week: On Monday, we can be especially sensitive to social cues that seem off or to imbalances in our interactions. We can be especially hungry for others’ appreciation, too. Hypersensitivity to social cues can mean what we do or don’t do now can be taken quite personally or bruise egos. Otherwise, Venus isn’t making many connections this week. On Saturday, the 4th, however, we’re heading towards a Venus-Node sextile that helps us connect with people and situations who/that help us grow and improve. Mercury and Mars are retrograde all week and beyond, and confused desires and directions can figure strongly.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Virgo July 9-August 6. If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus sesquiquadrate Mars July 26-27. Tensions in relationships. Attempting to satisfy romantic needs and assertive/sexual needs simultaneously can be challenging.
Venus trine Pluto July 27. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships are intense and deep, but not draining.
Venus parallel Chiron July 27-28. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.
Venus semi-square the Sun July 30. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and avoid overindulging or procrastinating.
Venus semi-square Jupiter August 5-6. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus trine Mars August 6-7. Sexual attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to enhance a relationship. Excellent time for starting a new relationship, all things equal.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, July 29th, from 5:25 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mercury), until the Moon enters Pisces at 7:28 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, July 31st, from 6:42 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Venus), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Wednesday, August 1st, at 6:54 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Thursday, August 2nd, from 10:52 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Taurus the next day, Friday, August 3rd, at 3:51 PM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
The Moon is waning this week – a period that is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).
According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs this week on Thursday, August 2nd, from 9:15 PM to 10:50 PM EDT, while the Moon is in Aries. Note that both Mercury and Mars are retrograde during this period, however. As well, we’re in between eclipses, and new beginnings are not advised.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Sun semi-square Venus. Inner discontent can spill over into our relationships, producing subtle tension. It’s best to get in touch with our needs and yearnings instead of overindulging or procastinating.
Mars square Uranus. We have a tendency to take risks, to feel restless, and to act on sudden impulses without considering consequences. We assert our wills and individuality powerfully, and we are willing to fight for freedom. We might feel rebellious in the face of rules and regulations, particularly those we might feel are outdated, or anything that requires us to conform. There may be changes in work schedules, or life’s circumstances could challenge us in such a way that we need to change our goals or actions. Energy is stop-and-go, and it can be hard to focus on only one activity.
Mars sextile Chiron. We may have the opportunity to take the lead, or to take action, regarding matters that lead to healing, cleansing, or teaching now. We can feel a sense of mission. There is likely to be a feeling of fearlessness when it comes to addressing problem areas, and self-confidence as well. There is a drive to take positive action, usually to defend or help others (or ourselves). It’s a strong period for cooperation and purposeful activity.
Note: Times given in the table/calendar above are Eastern Time (ET).

JULY 29
The Moon continues its transit of Aquarius until 7:28 PM EDT, opposing retrograde Mercury this morning when misunderstandings are possible. What we say may belie our feelings on a matter. However, the Aquarius Moon is usually a good time for sharing our ideas with one another, and there’s no reason why this shouldn’t happen outside of two hours on either side of this aspect. We’re independent yet we know how to make good use of a team under this influence. We’re progressive in our approach, and we’re also quite determined. We have a good sense of what’s worked in the past and what may be in need of an update. The Moon transits Pisces from 7:28 PM forward, and we seek out some level of escape from the regular or ordinary. We’re giving yet we may crave a little extra emotional space or time to regroup.
The Moon is void from 5:25 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mercury), until the Moon enters Pisces at 7:28 PM EDT.
JULY 30
The Sun is semi-square Venus today, and irritations that seem to stem from others could be the reflection of inner uneasiness. We can be especially hungry for others’ appreciation. What we want to do and think we should do can be at odds now, and we may not be very productive with this kind of discontent. We should look for creative solutions for dissatisfaction. The Moon spends the day in the sign of Pisces, stimulating our compassion, artistry, sympathy, and intuition. The Moon’s trine to Jupiter tonight encourages us to look beyond the details to see the big picture.
JULY 31
The Moon is in Pisces all day, and we can be a little less structured and more romantic, sensitive, and dreamy than usual. We’re inclined to adjust, help, and make sacrifices, and also to escape those things with which we feel uncomfortable. With the Moon’s sextile to Pluto this morning, we can have powerful dreams, ideas, fantasies, and insights. While this may not be the most productive of days in a material sense, it can be a good time for getting to a new understanding of a problem or difficulty. We tend to overindulge if we feel restless around the Moon’s opposition to Venus this evening, however. With a Jupiter-Ceres sextile today, we’re putting our hearts and faith into a cause, our loved ones, or a pet project, and we’re exceptionally generous with our time and energy. There can be positive developments in health, or with family and home matters.
The Moon is void from 6:42 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Venus), until the Moon enters Aries the next day, Wednesday, August 1st, at 6:54 AM EDT.
AUGUST 1
The Moon continues its transit of Pisces until 6:54 AM EDT, after which the Moon is in Aries. An Aries Moon is direct, straightforward, and quick. With a Mars-Uranus square today, we can be tempted to take risks or to act on impulses without considering consequences, and we can be feeling a little stir crazy. We may be too quick to move on immediate desires or to rebel if we feel at all confined or restrained. There may be changes in schedules or circumstances that challenge us to change our goals or adjust our actions. We might feel rebellious in the face of rules and regulations, particularly those we might feel are outdated, or anything that requires us to conform. Energy is stop-and-go, and it can be hard to focus on only one activity. Inner tension begs for release now, but we should avoid abrupt moves. This is the second of three such aspects (due to retrograde Mars), the first of which occurred on May 16th, and the final of which will occur on September 18th. We may be taking a second look at actions taken around mid-May or dealing with their consequences.
The Moon ends its void period at 6:54 AM EDT when it enters Aries.
AUGUST 2
The Moon spends the day in Aries, inspiring our sense of enterprise. We prefer to meet situations head-on. As much as we seek independence, the challenges of work or tensions related to our ambitions can wear us down tonight with the Moon’s square to Pluto. We have a stronger appreciation of the subtle layers of our interactions and for art, however, as the Sun and Neptune connect via a creative aspect, and we can feel inspired to create something meaningful.
The Moon is void from 10:52 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Mercury), until the Moon enters Taurus the next day, Friday, August 3rd, at 3:51 PM EDT.
AUGUST 3
The Moon continues its transit of assertive, innovative Aries until 3:51 PM EDT, after which it moves through the sign of steady, sensual Taurus. While we’re inclined to feel a little tense and rebellious with the Moon’s alignment to Uranus and square to Mars, reminding us of the tension between these planets, Mars forms a sextile with Chiron tonight, and we can feel a sense of mission. We’re driven to fix problems. Under this influence, we tend to latch onto projects and activities that give us a stronger sense of purpose. We may have the opportunity to take the lead or action on matters that lead to healing, cleansing, or teaching now. We may be defending or help others (or ourselves). There is likely to be a feeling of fearlessness when it comes to addressing problem areas.
The Moon continues its void period until 3:51 PM when it enters Taurus.
AUGUST 4
The Moon spends the day in deliberate Taurus. The Last Quarter Moon occurs this afternoon with the Sun in Leo forming a square to the Taurus Moon. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to a crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we now seek a clearer sense of what works for us–and what doesn’t. This is in preparation for next week’s New Moon when something new is born once again. It’s not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It’s time to begin finishing up the details of what we conceived at the last New Moon. As Mercury covers old ground in its retrograde state, we return to a Mercury-Pluto quincunx that first occurred in mid-July, exact very early tomorrow and in effect today. Decisions are hard to make now, and we may not only second-guess others but also our own perceptions. This is a time to make adjustments rather than bold moves.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Aquarius
Attraction to all that is new and unusual, and an instinctive need for improvement, characterize the Moon in Aquarius. Reactions are more intellectual than emotional, and interactions are more impersonal than personal, under this influence. This is a time that promotes social gatherings, dealing with group ideals and goals for the future, brainstorming, new ideas, and progressive changes. We are open to new methods of doing things and we have our eye on the future. It can be hard to stick to schedules now, as personal freedom is most important to us.
The Moon in Aquarius generally favors the following activities: Unusual or radical undertakings, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, joining a group.
When the Moon is in Pisces
We may not want to face reality while the Moon is in dreamy, impressionable Pisces. It can be a wistful, sensitive, intuitive, and compassionate time. We are especially imaginative, and our intuition reigns under this influence. Boundaries and walls come down, as Pisces energy merges and blends. It's a time when details are overlooked and feelings defy description.
The Moon in Pisces generally favors the following activities: Imaginative undertakings, mystical or spiritual pursuits, inner development, music and drama, going on a retreat, activities involving water.
When the Moon is in Aries
We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to begin something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Our pioneering impulses are strong, and we feel energetic, spontaneous, and enthusiastic. We may also be tactless and impulsive now. Excess energy is best channeled into physical activity.
People can be more self-motivated and also self-focused while the Moon is in Aries. It's a competitive rather than cooperative time. Accidents and tempers flaring are more likely than usual. This period is one of more personal courage.
The Moon in Aries generally favors the following activities: Quick actions that yield immediate results. Undertakings that involve the self and the personality. (Staying power may be lacking). Self-assertion, taking on challenges, beginning short-term projects.
When the Moon is in Taurus
We are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses." Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.
While the Moon is in Taurus, people can be emotionally constant but inflexible. It's a time of stronger focus on personal needs and comfort levels, and a period of more common sense and attention to practical matters.
The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Leo “This I do for me” is your motto at a time like this. This is your time to shine, like a swirl of starstuff that has finally reached critical mass and suddenly starts to give off more light than it receives. Issues of pride, mastery, and appreciation become more and more central to your lifestream as this cycle progresses, as does a very important lesson: it’s not what you do so much as how you do it, not who you are so much as how you make others feel about themselves. If it doesn’t come from the heart, it shouldn’t matter now.
Mercury in Leo The hallmark of the cycle you have just begun is thinking, learning and communicating with style. Intellectual creativity is highlighted, and your social connections have a certain flair of drama to them. Winning the admiration of others for the things you say or write (and the way you do it) takes on more importance in your life.
Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn’t you feel guilty about it: that’s what it’s like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Mars in Aquarius The reformer, the inventor, the engineer, the revolutionary – these are important archetypes for you as a new cycle gets underway in your life. They are icons of the ambitions that stir you at a time like this. Independence, freedom from past patterns, and a daring readiness to innovate: such are the paths of achievement for you now.
Jupiter in Scorpio The phase now beginning for you emphasizes fixing what is broken or unhealthy, thereby giving it a new lease on life. This is more than one person alone can handle, so the cooperation of others is essential. You give up something in order to get or create something, and you may not understand the reasons why at the time. Sex, money, power, and vitality become key issues.
Saturn in Capricorn Responsibility, hard work, ambition, and achievement: these are the foundations you need to build on now, as a new cycle dawns in your life. And yet, there is a tendency to be a little too hard, perhaps a bit cold, in your approach to these things. Let ambition take you to the top, but don’t let it lull you into thinking that the end justifies the means.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
