The NEW MOON/Solar Eclipse occurs on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024, at 2:49 PM EDT.
The New Moon in the sign of Libra starts a good cycle in which to commit to personal goals that express the positive energies of the sign of the Scales.
We have a chance to build our negotiating skills without compromising our principles or needs, and without resorting to appeasement. It’s a time to work on re-balancing our relationships and to recognize our partners as teammates rather than adversaries.
With this potent Libra energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives. Libra teaches us to learn to make peace with those around us and to establish more harmony in our environments, establish a sense of order and balance in our lives, and recognize the value of partnerships. This is an ideal time to work on these skills.
Libra has an innate ability for–and love of–synthesizing opposites. Peace and harmony are the goals, but there’s a fine balancing act involved along the way that requires some commitment and effort.
This New Moon brings fresh and creative energy into our lives, and more specifically, into our relationships. This is a cycle in which balancing our close personal relationships becomes an urgent desire. Negotiations may be especially effective, as we are inclined to assert our needs in ways that don’t offend others. A Mars-Saturn trine can help us see the value of pacing ourselves and keeping our feet on the ground. Libra’s ruler, Venus, also harmonizes with Mars and Saturn.
However, this eclipse is square Mars, and some prematurity is possible. Mercury aligns with the Sun and Moon, pointing to a lot of thought and discussion going into our new beginnings. However, because this is an eclipse, we’re not seeing the whole picture.
The New Moon/Solar Eclipse Chart:
This phase of the Moon occurs at 10 degrees and 4 minutes of Libra, affecting planets at approximately 5 to 15 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) the most.
As a Solar Eclipse, this New Moon packs more punch! It’s the fifth eclipse in a set of six occurring along the Aries-Libra axis from April 20th, 2023, to March 29, 2025. The first one was a Total Solar Eclipse in late Aries. While we’ve been focusing on building our independence and working on assertiveness, this October eclipse in Libra prompts us to consider healthy relating and how it affects the process.
A Solar Eclipse at approximately the same degree of Libra last occurred on October 3rd, 2005. Before that, it was October 3rd, 1986, and October 2nd, 1978. An eclipse set along the Aries-Libra axis most recently occurred from 2013-2016. Before that, it was from 2004-2006. We might encounter similar themes as we did during these periods.
Major developments in the personal areas ruled by Libra in our charts are likely to occur over the upcoming months.
The above chart is excellent for seeing the fundamental influences and chart pattern of this New Moon. The chart below adds more details with additional points. Click to enlarge:

This week: The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Libra; Venus is in Scorpio; Mars is in Cancer.
The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 22. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance–finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker.
However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless!
In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.
Mercury is in Libra from September 26-October 13. When Mercury is in Libra, we are diplomatic and friendly. During this cycle, we bring a more rational approach to one-to-one relationships. It’s a good time to think about ways to improve our negotiation skills.
Mercury in Libra can be vacillating energy as we attempt to see both sides of any given situation. Making quick decisions can be more challenging than usual, as we can sit “on the fence.” We may too easily accommodate others’ opinions to keep the peace. In our negotiations, we don’t want to assert ourselves so as to appear to be the “bad guy.” However, this is a reasonable period for considering others’ points of view. We are more inclined to arrive at fair conclusions.
Venus is in Scorpio from September 22-October 17. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. It’s a highly emotional position for Venus, and it’s passionate energy.
Our relationships are immensely important to us, and we may even feel that they consume us. In fact, we tend to want to be consumed by them! Our drive is toward intense closeness, but blind faith in our partners is extremely hard for us now. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. Scorpio is an “all or nothing” energy, and relationships tend to be somewhat of a rollercoaster ride as a result. Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises to feel alive and vital.
Similarly, during this Venus-in-Scorpio cycle, we seek or gravitate to absorbing, deeply engaging, dramatic pleasures, activities, projects, and art. Things that are profound, disturbing, mysterious, or unusual can be more appealing now.
This can be a good time for finances, especially when working with others’ talents or resources, whether as an agent, supporter, or partner.
Mars is in Cancer from September 4-November 3, 2024, and then January 6-April 18, 2025. [Why so long and in two steps? Mars transits the full sign of Cancer from September 4th to November 3rd, when it moves on to Leo, but then turns retrograde in Leo on December 6th, 2024. While retrograde, Mars later returns to Cancer (on January 6th, 2025). Mars ends its retrograde on February 23rd, and later completes its transit of Cancer on April 18th, 2025.] We pursue our interests ardently, but we avoid a direct approach to going after we want while Mars transits Cancer. As well, our goals and plans are subject to mood swings and vacillations. We are defensive rather than overtly aggressive. Much of what we do depends on our current mood of the moment.
We’re also very intuitive and can be moved to take action to bring peace or comfort and safety to our lives during this period. We go to bat for our loved ones. In fact, we’re fiercely protective. It’s a powerful period for putting ego matters aside so that we can push our plans forward. Inner satisfaction and love are generally more important to us than outer achievements at this time. Personal and domestic goals are our priority during this phase.
.
Jupiter is in Gemini.
Jupiter began its transit of Gemini on May 24th, 2024, and continues its transit of the sign until June 9th, 2025. Read more about Jupiter’s transit of Gemini.
Saturn transits Pisces from March 7th, 2023 until May 24th, 2025, and Sep 1st, 2025, to Feb 13th, 2026. Read about Saturn’s transit of Pisces. Saturn will enter Aries on May 24th, 2025.
Uranus is in Taurus.
Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Pluto transitions from Capricorn to Aquarius in 2023 and 2024. Read about Pluto’s transit of Aquarius. Pluto retrograded back into Capricorn, and was in Capricorn until January 20th, 2024. Pluto was in Aquarius from January 20th to September 1st, when it retreated into Capricorn once again. Note: Pluto is slow-moving through the zodiac signs!
Note that Pluto is now in Capricorn for the final journey through the sign from September 1st to November 19th, 2024, from which time Pluto stays in Aquarius for many years to come.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Scorpio from September 22-October 17. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special–contact that breaks the taboos, that is extreme and intense, and that is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional position for Venus. It is a passionate, sensual, and intense energy.
Disdain for mediocrity and superficiality can compel us to create crises in order to feel alive and vital. If a relationship becomes too settled or predictable, we may crave more intensity and catalytic experience. Jealousies, fears of betrayal, and power games are the shadow side of Venus in Scorpio.
We may easily become obsessed with a fear that our partners might be betraying us, or that they are not as consumed by and dedicated to the relationship as us. This can lead us to try to uncover the “truth”, reading too many negative possibilities in our partners’ actions and words.
This week: On Wednesday and Thursday, it’s not easy to get our minds and hearts on the same page. Further, there’s some ambiguity in our relationships or regarding our feelings temporarily.
On Thursday and Friday, we’re ready to lock something down, make a commitment, or simply embrace responsibility. We crave more stability in love and friendship.
Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:
Venus in Scorpio This is way beyond love, all the way to obsession – that’s the nature of the cycle that now takes hold in your life. We’re not talking just lukewarm WANT here; we’re talking red-hot GOT TO HAVE! Passion, jealousy, possession: these are the kinds of experiences that can flow from the intensity that courses through you at one level or another now – voracious.
Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter September 27. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus semi-sextile Mercury October 2-3. It’s difficult to get our minds and hearts on the same page. As such, it may be all too easy to say things we don’t mean/feel.
Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune October 2-3. Romantic confusion as well as relationship ups and downs. Self-deceptions may come to light now.
Venus trine Saturn October 3-4. Relationships are stabilized and steady, although feelings are expressed reservedly, formally, or sparingly. A new sense of realism and maturity in existing partnerships. Relationships begun under this influence possess a distinctly practical theme, almost as if the partnership is a business endeavor, and have much potential to last.
Venus trine Mars October 7-8. Sexual attraction, romantic activities, and fertility are favored. This is one of the best times to enhance a relationship. Excellent time for starting a new relationship, all things equal.
The Moon & Timing
The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During the Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects.
The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here and is indicative of the “outcome” of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology).
Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart to determine the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass.
The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology. The following tables incorporate the modern planets, but some astrologers do not count Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in void Moon calculations.
The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:
Void-of-course Moon on Saturday, September 28th, from 11:37 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Virgo the next day, Sunday, September 29th, at 5:42 AM EDT.
VOC Moon on Tuesday, October 1st, from 5:39 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra at 6:20 PM EDT.
VOC Moon on Friday, October 4th, from 6:40 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 7:23 AM EDT.

Timing with the Moon – Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives
It’s important to note that there are more factors to consider in addition to the windows listed below. The following windows are starting points. For example, you generally don’t want to elect a new venture when a very challenging aspect is applying, and it’s preferable to elect a time when a particularly positive aspect hasn’t yet perfected (is applying rather than separating).
The Moon is waning this week until the New Moon on October 2nd, which is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, although with some exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details). The Moon is waxing this week after the New Moon on October 2nd, which is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, also with some exceptions.
According to principles of timing with the Moon, there are no clear windows of opportunity this week. The Solar Eclipse on the 2nd also makes it an unclear time for new beginnings due to some information hidden from view.

This Week’s Calendar
This Week’s Aspects
Mars trine Saturn. Work takes on definite shape, and we can see results from our efforts. This gives us a sense of responsibility and a feeling of directedness and purposefulness. This is a good time to temper our energy and to exercise better judgment. A good time to get and feel organized. Seniority is favored now. Traditional methods work, and thoroughness brings rewards.
Mercury conjunct Sun. We are especially sharp, communicative, and open at this time, as our wants are aligned with our thoughts. It’s a favorable time for solving problems. What we say or write now has impact, for better or for worse!
Mercury sesquiquadrate Uranus. We can have flashes of insight, but tend to be scatterbrained. Our ideas and communications may not be well-received because they don’t seem to others to carry weight. Our minds are not peaceful or harmonious under this influence, and irritable tempers, sarcastic speech, and dogmatism are negative expressions of this energy. However, fresh and creative ideas may come to us now.
Venus sesquiquadrate Neptune. Happiness is addictive under this influence. We tend to see what we want to see. Glossing over the more realistic points, details, and flaws of circumstances and of people provides us with instant gratification. However, it’s wise to hold off on making important purchases, or natalizing a relationship until the veil lifts. Take care with legal, financial, and social involvements, contracts, or formal agreements under this dreamy influence.
Mercury quincunx Saturn. Communication challenges today make it hard to get a point across. Delays, “red tape”, and vague feelings of forgetting important details.
Sun sesquiquadrate Uranus. During this transit, we feel the need for action, but if we don’t know where we’re headed, we might take the wrong turn. Unexpected changes in plans or events can test our patience, and we might feel a bit out of control. However, they could stimulate us to try new approaches and they certainly act to cut boredom. This transit could offer us the drive to do something new, but avoid making hasty major decisions for the time being.
Venus trine Saturn. Affections stabilize and mature. Maturity with others allows us to take the bad with the good, and finds us seeing our relationships realistically. Small advances can be made in business and in partnerships through strengthening and bonding. Support from older people or authority figures may come by way of solid advice or more tangible help. Renewed ties to old friends are possible, or a new sense of responsibility can be felt in existing friendships. Business sense is good.

SEPTEMBER 29
Mercury and the Sun will align tomorrow. Today, both bodies form conjunctions with the True South Node of the Moon. We may feel stuck on a mental plane today, and the tendency is to overthink, overexplain, or overanalyze, which can be a form of procrastination or emotional avoidance. We should consider whether we’re holding on to things for comfort and familiarity when we’re better off moving on. Otherwise, this can be a time to tap into our special talents and use them positively. As the day advances, we approach a Mars-Saturn trine, which will perfect minutes into tomorrow, and we value endurance and perseverance. Carefully picking and choosing our activities comes naturally now. Still, we feel more productive, directed, and purposeful. A slow, steady, methodical approach works best under this influence. We get the job done, and we’re thorough! This trine favors discipline, moderation, tradition, pacing ourselves, temperance, and realism.
The void Moon continues today until the Moon enters Virgo at 5:42 AM EDT.
SEPTEMBER 30
With today’s Mercury-Sun alignment, sudden awareness or clarity spurs us on. What we say or write now has an impact, for better or worse! It’s an excellent time to fill in the details of recent ideas and turn recent discoveries into something valuable and workable. There can be an epiphany, illumination of a matter, or a clearing of the air. An idea or plan can come to full bloom, or ideas and realizations now are pivotal. We aim to be diplomatic, but in our enthusiasm, we should watch for intellectualizing issues that require sensitivity. The Moon’s transit of Virgo puts us in the mood to fix minor problems and tidy our lives in various ways. It’s a good time of the lunar month to attend to chores and practical matters.
OCTOBER 1
The Moon continues its transit of Virgo until 6:19 PM EDT, when it moves into Libra. More than usual, we seek balance today, first through tidying our lives through working on details while the Moon is in Virgo, and later, through harmonizing. We’re idealistic and considerate. On this day before a New Moon Solar Eclipse in Libra, it’s best to wind down and avoid new beginnings. Instead, it’s a good time to reflect on what we want to improve. A Venus-Ceres aspect coming into play as the day advances suggests we can feel pleasantly attached to others. We find nurturing and supporting people in our lives more natural.
The Moon is void from 5:39 PM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Libra at 6:20 PM EDT.
OCTOBER 2
The New Moon Solar Eclipse occurs today at 2:50 PM EDT. With this eclipse occurring in the sign of Libra, the focus is on negotiating, partnering, and creating harmony and balance. It’s about new beginnings regarding these issues, and long-term changes are in the works!
This eclipse is the fifth in an Aries-Libra set of six with us from April 2023 to March 2025. It can highlight and challenge our issues surrounding partnerships and in/dependence. While we’ve been building our independence and working on assertiveness, we’re now prompted to consider healthy relating and how it affects the process. Circumstances nudge us to see where we have fallen out of balance. Ultimately, we are better positioned to understand that changes or endings are necessary for our growth.
However, with the eclipse occurring now, we remain symbolically in the dark, and it’s best to take our time with new beginnings. Occurring at the time of a Superior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, an epiphany, illumination of a matter, or a clearing of the air is even more likely and significant. We are sharp, communicative, and open at this time, and what we say or write now has a strong impact, for better or worse! An idea or plan can come to full bloom.
With Mercury’s sesquiquadrate with Uranus today, there could be minor missteps or surprising turnarounds. While our minds are open to possibilities, there can be some mental disorganization to manage.
OCTOBER 3
The Moon spends the day in gracious Libra, and we’re looking for balance. Moderation is appealing now. A Venus-Neptune minor square today might seduce us into believing things we want to believe. While glossing over the more realistic points, details, and flaws of circumstances and people might feel good at the moment, it’s best to hold off on making important purchases or relationship decisions until the veil lifts. Later today, however, Mercury heads toward a quincunx with Saturn (exact early tomorrow), and mental anxiety can interfere with making good, practical choices. There can be communication challenges or mental blocks. Doubts might slow down our movements and initiatives. Still, however annoying, it can be a helpful process as we take a break from pushing ahead to check in with our objectives.
OCTOBER 4
The Sun forms a sesquiquadrate with Uranus this morning, suggesting we want to make a move, but we may not know where to begin or where to go with our intentions just for now. While unexpected changes in plans or events can test our patience, they might also bring on new approaches, leading to useful, instructive, or interesting detours. As the day advances, Venus forms a trine with Saturn, helping us sort out our feelings. We might demonstrate our affection through practical support, service, and shows of loyalty. This influence reminds us of the value of constancy and reliability. We approach love, relationships, money, or pleasure-seeking more maturely, responsibly, and with a level head. It can also be a time when we enjoy our responsibilities, work, or duties more than usual.
The Moon is void from 6:40 AM EDT, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Pluto), until the Moon enters Scorpio at 7:23 AM EDT.
OCTOBER 5
The Moon spends the day in Scorpio, encouraging us to uncover the hidden layers of any given situation. A Venus-Jupiter biquintile midday inspires cooperation in situations that call for it. We give one another the benefit of the doubt. In fact, it can feel good to put our faith in someone or something now. However, we’re heading toward a Mercury-Mars square, exact early tomorrow, that can be agitating. With this aspect influencing the day, we should watch for hasty communications and skipping steps. We can find ourselves too quickly in disagreement, likely because we’re communicating ineffectively or impatiently. For example, we may be competing for the floor when expressing our ideas, thoughts, and opinions, making it difficult to engage in healthy dialogue. However, it’s a strong aspect for agitating things enough that we’re asking questions.

Moon Signs This Week:
When the Moon is in Leo
The Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.
The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.
When the Moon is in Virgo
We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.
The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.
When the Moon is in Libra
Creating order is the focus, not necessarily through tidying or organizing as was the case while the Moon was in Virgo, but rather through pleasing interactions with others and aesthetics in our environment. We tend to solve problems through diplomacy, and we are more able to put aside our own emotions in order to achieve the peace we crave. The tendency now is to avoid direct confrontations. Decisions do not come easily. Seeing both sides to any given situation is the main reason for hesitation. Fear of losing others' approval is another.
The Moon in Libra generally favors the following activities: Relationship and partnership issues, activities involving teamwork and cooperation, activities that involve self-examination, activities related to beauty.
When the Moon is in Scorpio
Intensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.
The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.
Upcoming Weeks: Calendars
THIS WEEK’S PLANETARY POSITIONS BY SIGN (General Trends):
Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships – romantic, business, social – are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It’s easy in theory, but it’s only in practice that it comes to mean anything real – so practice until you get it right!
Mercury in Libra A new cycle begins for you, signaling a greater than usual interest in relationships, social connections, and the arts – on a more intellectual level than in the past, most likely. Seeing both sides of an issue, and figuring out resolutions to opposing views: these things take on more importance in your life.
Mars in Cancer Defensive, aren’t we? With this new cycle getting underway, protecting and preserving you and yours takes on a higher than usual priority. A sensitivity to the needs and wants of others and an appreciation for their frailties (as well as your own) makes you more cautious and conservative … you pick your battles with care.
Jupiter in Gemini Facilitating the transfer of ideas and information takes on a special priority for you now. Writing, studying, and communicating play a bigger role in your life as a result. The belief that well-informed people will make the right decisions becomes an article of faith. Just remember: sometimes people know the right thing to do and STILL do something different!
Saturn in Pisces Making peace with the past, coming to terms with karmic debts: these are some of the issues that confront you as a new phase begins in your life. Failure to face these things can cause setbacks and put obstacles in your path. Learn to look beyond the narrowly personal and selfish or you’ll get in over your head.
Uranus in Taurus Practicality and ingenuity combine as powerful drives in your life now that you have begun a new cycle. Taking innovative concepts and making them real and practical is your strong suit; getting stuck in the mud is to be avoided at all costs. Financial savvy, inventiveness, worldly genius.
Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver’s seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is Maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?
Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable – and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small, but has bigger consequences than you’d think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place…
