2009 Love & Relationship Trends
Love and Relationship Trends in 2009: Outer Planets
Three outer planets have recently changed signs or are changing signs in 2009, and these changes affect our attitude towards love, partnering, and relating.
Pluto entered Capricorn last year, but dipped back into Sagittarius and then entered Capricorn again. This year, Pluto is solidly in Capricorn and will stay in the sign until 2023. It’s still early for major shifts in attitudes, but we’re going to be seeing some interesting trends. We’ll be accepting more responsibility for our actions–and our passions. We’ll be experiencing a shift towards the traditional in all sorts of life “departments”, including fashion and style (more professional, perhaps preppy, conservative, and minimalistic styles as opposed to the hippie revival of recent years) for example.
In terms of love and relating, we’ve been caught up in a very experimental, haphazard and rather wanton approach in recent years. We’ve seen a huge spike in promiscuity, “f-friend” relationships, infidelity, breakups, and so forth. Many will say it’s due to the ability to connect, largely anonymously (at first), with more people from the comfort of one’s home via the Internet. It’s become enormously easy to hook up with others for casual affairs. Relating has become so much more competitive in nature, breeding insecurity and, for many, a sense of faithlessness and lack of confidence in the couple. Over the coming years, I believe there will be a shift towards more conservative partnering, taking more responsibility for ourselves and our partners, and valuing longterm relationships. Capricorn is a mature, goal-oriented, deliberate, and very “prepared” energy. Preparing for the future and practical concerns are especially important to Capricorn. We might view an accomplished, mature, and reliable partner as most valuable during this trend. Capricorn is also rather reserved with expressing feelings, at least until trust is gained/earned.
Just as Pluto takes a long time to move through a sign, trends associated with its cycle take time to unfold. A more immediate energy is Jupiter’s recent ingress into the sign of Aquarius. Jupiter changes signs approximately yearly. Recently, Jupiter has been changing signs pretty close to the New Year, making it a little easier to write yearly horoscopes (ha!). So, Jupiter in Aquarius pretty much helps define 2009.
In terms of love relationships and partnering, Jupiter in Aquarius energy is fair-minded, cooperative, impartial, and impersonal. We value freedom of choice, individuality, fellowship, and friendship. So, while Pluto is working to transform our values in the long term, Jupiter has a more immediate effect on our value system, and in 2009, our attitude towards partnering is likely going to be less than traditional.
Saturn will move into the one-to-one partnership or “marriage” sign of Libra at the end of October, and that’s when we’ll see the Pluto in Capricorn energy described above a little more readily. Saturn will bring maturity (ideally) and responsibility to our attitudes toward partnering, although it’s bound to be challenging in the early months of this sign change. It’s always challenging in the beginning stages of a planet’s trek through a sign, but this one perhaps especially so, because it starts with a bang in the form of Saturn square to Pluto. Attitudes toward close personal relationships will be scrutinized and tested. Saturn stays in a sign for approximately 2-1/2 years.
Then there’s the Saturn-Uranus opposition active much of the year. It’s a case of pitting freedom against responsibility, and really, when you think of it, it’s much like the Capricorn-Aquarius energy of the year, except with an opposition, it’s more an “in your face” influence–very hard to ignore! So, it looks like 2009 will bring a lot of changes into our love lives, and probably quite a few challenges as we struggle with what we think we should do. Although Saturn and Uranus are both very different energies, neither of them make it easy to get in touch with what’s in our hearts.
