What’s Ahead in the Year of the Pig 2019?
*Please note that Chinese New Year and the start of the astrological year usually fall on different dates. The first day of the astrological year is February 3rd/4th. In 2019, the New year happens to fall close to this: on February 4th/5th.
The Chinese Lunar New Year occurs every year on the New Moon of the first lunar month, which is the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice. The exact date can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. A complete cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar takes 60 years and comprises five cycles of 12 years–12 animal signs and 5 elements.
The Chinese Lunar New Year differs to that of the Roman New Year because the Chinese calendar is based on the phases of the moon, whereas the Gregorian calendar, on which the Roman New Year is based, is an arithmetic calendar.
Each of the 12 years of the Chinese lunar calendar is named after an animal. These are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
Legend has it that Buddha summoned all the animals to come to see him before he departed earth. Only 12 came so he rewarded those 12 by naming a year in the Chinese lunar calendar after them, in the order they arrived to see him.
As with western astrology where it’s believed that the Sun’s position at the time of an individual’s birth determines certain personality traits that a person will possess, it’s thought that each animal represented in the Chinese lunar calendar bestows certain characteristics on individuals who are born during the year that particular animal “rules.”
It’s important to note that while most of the calendar year is governed by a particular animal, the astrological new year begins on February 3/4, and before that date, the previous animal is ruler.
This year, Chinese New Year falls on February 4th/5th, and the Year of the Pig runs from February 4th, 2019, forward.
The Pig is the twelfth sign of the Chinese Zodiac (out of twelve).
The Pig is cooperative, peace-loving, and indulgent. The Pig year favors cooperation and some leniency and tolerance. This is a time for prioritizing flexibility, good humor, and connections, but it’s also a period for special attention to ethics. These themes vibe well with the Jupiter in Sagittarius transit active most of the year, which is celebratory, good-hearted, and moral.
The Earth Pig has the potential of lovely fertility, although since Pig is naturally Water, there can be some mud! We may be battling some excessive emotionality or inertia at times in 2019.
The Year of the Pig 2019 is a Yin Earth year, and it’s a year for finding happy mediums. The year favors those who are willing to enjoy themselves and cooperate with others, but who also keep their feet on the ground.
{Note that the sequence of years runs as follows: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, Yin Water.}
Caution and moderation were advised in 2009, the Year of the Ox; flexibility and the ability to deal with change were considered essential qualities in 2010; the ability to make compromises and to negotiate were important in 2011; adventurousness and boldness were favored in 2012; 2013 favored inner development and renewal/recycling; 2014 favored quick decisions and a quick pace; 2015 favored healing and supporting; and the ability to bounce back from problems and embrace change was favored in 2016. The year 2017 favored getting organized, putting in the hours, and saving; and 2018 was good for showing some loyalty and gunning for stability.
The Pig is the 12th sign of the Chinese zodiac, reducing to a 12/3 in Numerology. The year 2019 also reduces to a 3, making the symbolism of the numbers 12 and 3 particularly powerful this year (see also Numerology). This is a time of reaching out, socializing, and exploring. It’s an enthusiastic time when we’re ready for adventure. Opportunities for playtime are greater than usual, and expressing creativity comes naturally. We should watch for scattering our energies.
The last Pig year was 2007 (12-year cycle). The last Earth Pig year was 1959 (60-year cycle). Events occurring this year can bear some similarities to these years in history.
Note that the Pig sign is naturally Yin Water with some Wood and 2019 is a Yin Earth year. Earth soaks up Water and can produce mud, or it blocks its flow, producing a slightly difficult relationship, but overall, the year is expected to be a decent one.
With Earth, there is stability, dedication, loyalty, and steadfastness. However, there can be laziness and stubbornness, as well as a fear of change on the challenging side. Fortunately, Water helps with these latter traits. Water coordinates and mediates, helping to bring people and things together.
There is good energy, generally speaking, for money this year, although there is a real tendency to overspend and overindulge. In the Year of the Pig, we seek to cooperate, get along, and enjoy yourselves.
There is no shortage of creative ideas, optimism, and giving one another the benefit of the doubt. It’s a good year in which to make money in new or different ways, and financial success, generally speaking, is better for Rooster and Ox, and to some degree, Snake.
While duty and responsibility were in focus last year, this is a time for loosening up or winding down, at least a little. It’s still practical, but less rigid. The patient and peace-seeking are favored, although we can easily overindulge at times this year.
As the 12th and last sign, this is the time for enjoying the rewards of previous years, but it is a mostly good year in and of itself. We’re also on the discrete and low-key side, even though we’re friendly. We’re compassionate and eager to please.
There appears to be less of a gap between generations in the Year of the Pig. Ideas are fresh and we’re listening to one another more than usual. It’s a cooperative, celebratory, and conciliatory period, in general.
Tiger and Dragon are in particularly good form for friendships and “people luck” and Horse is in great shape for general good fortune or protection in 2019. Energy levels are best for Wood and Earth signs, including Rabbit, Tiger, Ox, Dog, Dragon, and Sheep. Snake is least favored this year. However, this is general and based on the year of birth only — the full picture comes with the addition of the month, day, and hour.
In terms of how each Chinese Zodiac sign will fare in the Year of the Pig, a major consideration is how compatible your sign is with the Pig sign:
Pigs are most compatible with Rabbit and Sheep (the Pig, Rabbit, and Sheep form a harmonious triangle of affinity – they are the diplomats or mediators), and to some degree with Tiger (considered a secret friend), and these are the signs that are expected to fare the best in 2019 generally speaking.
Pig is Water, like Rat, and this can sometimes boost the year’s fortune for the Rat. However, because the year 2019 is Earth, and Water and Earth can produce mud, there can be some feeling of being blocked. Moderation, patience, and going slow is the solution.
Pigs are most incompatible with Snake (their opposite sign) and to a lesser degree with Monkey and another Pig, and these are the signs that are expected to find 2019 the most challenging, for the most part.
Pig is traditionally not especially favored in their own year.
Another important consideration is your Element. The year 2019 is a Yin Earth year.
Fire creates Earth and Earth creates Metal, suggesting good connections with Fire and Metal in 2019. Wood destroys Earth and Earth destroys Water. As such, Earth is in a difficult relationship with Wood and Water this year–the very elements natural to Pig, so it’s complicated.
Earth is friendly or compatible with Fire and Metal.
Wood and Water are incompatible with (destructive/hostile to) Earth.
The Yin Earth of 2019 is attracted to Yang Water, so relationships can be very good for Yang Water people in 2019, and Rat is naturally Yang Water.
Love in 2019
Love & Relationships in the Year of the Pig:
In the Year of the Pig, we’re eager to please, happy to give one another the benefit of the doubt, and ready to get along. 2019 is an Earth year, and the Earth element is stable, stubborn, and conservative. Generally speaking, this is a time for quiet but fun and interesting dates and relationships. The year 2019 is also a Yin year, and this, too, favors laying low, taking it easy, receiving, and observing or attracting. Pigs seek fun, happiness, and peace, making these qualities particularly attractive, in general, in the Year of the Pig.
Pig and Tiger are attracted, such that Tiger can fare particularly well in the romantic department in 2019. Yin Earth is attracted to Yang Water, suggesting Rat does quite well in the love and sex departments this year. Dragon is in particularly good shape for romantic relationships and people luck, in general, this year.
On the other hand, Snake may suffer from some disruptions in friendships.

Horoscopes for 2019
The following are descriptions of the positive and negative personality traits of the Chinese zodiac signs, with a forecast or horoscope for the Earth Pig Year of 2019:
Rat
(Born 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020)*
Positive: Influential, sociable, imaginative, and charismatic. Rat people will always stay loyal to their friends.
Negative: Power-hungry, gossiping, indiscreet, and meddling. These individuals don’t always plan for the future.
The Rat is Yang Water.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Rat:
As this is the year before their own year, 2019 can bring Rats some challenges, but never insurmountable ones. [Note, 2020 will be the Year of the Rat]. For the Rat, 2019 in a general sense, is a year for review and taking stock rather than one that favors bold new beginnings.
However, Rat has a special relationship with Pig (they’re both Water signs), and this gives a wonderful boost to love and sex in this Year of the Pig. It can feel especially comfortable to express themselves and their ideas in 2019. Career is likely to be status quo — no major changes one way or the other. Even so, if the Rat is looking for work, they should seek something that truly matches their personality. Money can increase this year, but so can spending! Rats should look for the small print if major deals are part of the picture. With health, they should seek more outside time, heal, and let go. The year 2019 brings out the Rat’s creativity and confidence mentally.
RAT in 2019:
Ox
(Born 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021)*
Positive: Diligent, stable, and possesses a strong sense of purpose. These people build long-lasting friendships.
Negative: Stubborn. Ox people aren’t often flexible.
The Ox is Yin Earth.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Ox:
The naturally hard-working nature of the Ox shines forth in the Year of the playful Pig, 2019. While others may get a little lazy this year, the Ox is plugging along. Still, it makes sense to come to a good work-life balance, so easing up a bit with work might help. This is a social year, and it might require the Ox to reach out more than they’re accustomed, but this can bring on some nice opportunities.
The Ox should watch for overspending and overindulgence, in general, but this is a strong year for abundance, wealth, home, family, and friends. The constitution is good as long as moderation is practiced. The chances to enhance, improve, or find love run high for the Ox in 2019, the Year of the Pig.
OX in 2019:
Tiger (1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022)*
Positive: Brave, strong, charismatic, and benevolent. Tigers are risk-takers and true adventurers.
Negative: Impetuous and hot-headed. These people aren’t good at taking orders from others.
The Tiger is Yang Wood.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Tiger:
Tiger and Pig get along well, and this helps boost the overall luck of Tiger in the year 2019, particularly in the people department. Energy levels are strong and Tiger’s overall outlook is optimistic. While finding a business partner may be in the offing, overall career prospects are not expected to be fabulous for Tiger in the Year of the Pig, so keeping things status quo and waiting for a luckier year to make a change might be the wisest choice. People luck is good, but Tigers do need to make special efforts to maintain and improve relationships this year.
TIGER in 2019:
Rabbit
(Born 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011)*
Positive: Tactful, intelligent, caring, considerate, and virtuous. Rabbit people don’t like conflict.
Negative: Pedantic and secretive. These people can appear a little cold and distant at times.
The Rabbit is Yin Wood.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Rabbit:
Career luck is decent for the Rabbit in the Year of the Pig, although effort needs to be put forth to realize it. Reaching out to others can help push things along. Money is similar — with effort and networking, Rabbit should do fine in the wealth department, although lucky breaks are not likely. Partnered Rabbits are likely to do well in love in 2019, while singles are happier with their relationship status. Social life is expected to be quite fulfilling this year, and energy levels steady for most of the year, and then building and increasing towards the end of 2019.
RABBIT in 2019:
Dragon
(Born 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024)*
Positive: Successful, proud, lucky, and enthusiastic. Dragons are determined people and able to inspire others.
Negative: Rigid and easily infatuated. Dragon people don’t like routine.
The Dragon is Yang Wood/Earth.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Dragon:
The Year of the Pig, 2019, is strong for money matters for Dragon. Prospects are excellent, in fact. There may be some problems with your reputation this year, making it wise to be humble and considerate and conciliatory if possible. Dragon’s career can improve, but associated pressures and responsibilities increase along with it. Love and social life are both expected to fare rather well. Overall, the year of the Pig does favor Dragon, and opportunities to advance are likely to present themselves. The general pitfalls do apply nevertheless, so it makes sense to watch for overindulgence and overspending.
DRAGON in 2019:
Snake
(Born 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013)*
Positive: Intuitive, wise, perceptive, and compassionate. Snakes prefer the finer things in life.
Negative: Lazy and extravagant. These people may have a problem with depending on others.
The Snake is Yin Fire.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Snake:
Because Snake and Pig are opposite one another and have a discordant relationship, Snake is not expected to have a standout year, but while it’s not expected to be fabulous, 2019 shouldn’t be ultra challenging, either. In fact, these things are cyclical and years such as this one can be highly useful for laying down the groundwork for future successes. If possible, it makes sense to keep the career status quo. Income is likely to be steady this year, but other money sources may not be. Love can have its ups and downs, and disputes are possible. The Snake’s social life may feel pressured or tense at times in 2019. The Snake should look within for answers, or seek guidance and mediation.
SNAKE in 2019:
Horse
(Born 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026)*
Positive: Popular, engaging, refined, and persuasive. Horse people are hardworking and independent.
Negative: Selfish and unscrupulous. These individuals may be rebellious and shun the advice of others.
The Horse is Yang Fire.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Horse:
Fortunately, the Pig and Horse are attracted, and this bodes especially well for Horses in the year 2019, especially for overall luck, but also for people luck. You can be a wonderful mediator this year, in fact. The Horse might thoroughly enjoy helping others who are not having as good a year as them. Money is perhaps their least favored category in 2019, but still very good. There are excellent career prospects and opportunities. Love and social life are also expected to be quite fortunate. Many Horses will enjoy a strengthened relationship and others may fall in love this year. Despite all of this, do watch for gossip that gets out of hand.
HORSE in 2019:
Goat (or Sheep or Ram) (Born 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015)*
Positive: Sensitive, imaginative, and well-mannered. Goats are peace lovers who don’t like disagreements.
Negative: Pessimistic and tardy. These people can let others take advantage of them too easily.
The Goat is Yin Fire.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Goat:
The Year of the Pig, 2019, is particularly good for money and career opportunities for the Goat. Love is expected to be strong, too, and health is likely to improve. While there are overall gains this year, Goats should watch for small problems with reputation or procedure. It’s a year when they’re a little more accountable than usual. In Goat’s dealings, they should be careful to be kind, clear, and aboveboard, always taking the high road this year for best results.
GOAT (SHEEP) in 2019:
Monkey
(Born 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016)*
Positive: Very inquisitive, curious, and witty with leadership qualities. Monkeys are popular people.
Negative: Deceitful and self-absorbed. These individuals can be childish and drawn to mischief.
The Monkey is Yang Metal.
Because Monkey and Pig don’t typically see eye-to-eye, the Monkey may have some issues adapting in 2019, the Year of the Pig, but nothing unmanageable. Career is expected to be status quo, so it’s probably best to keep things as they were, waiting for better opportunities to come in later years. Mind you, the Monkey is likely to get noticed for what they do, but this doesn’t necessarily translate to a raise. Money opportunities can arise elsewhere, and the advice is to save. The Pig Year can be a little indulgent or slack, and it may take extra effort to be moderate and to save, but it’s a wise thing to do. In love, Monkeys need to put in more effort. There may also be some gossip to deal with, but Monkey can avoid this by being extra careful to avoid misrepresentation or misunderstanding. It’s best to be as humble as possible, observe, learn, and wait in 2019. Don’t forget to find time for enjoyment since the Pig year is a celebratory, playful year overall.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Monkey:
MONKEY in 2019:
Rooster
(Born 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017)*
Positive: Enthusiastic, dignified, and resilient. Roosters are well-organized and good time-keepers.
Negative: Bossy and pedantic. These people are often a little too outspoken and hate being criticized.
The Rooster is Yin Metal.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Rooster:
The Rooster may gain some notoriety in the Year of the Pig, 2019, so would be wise to be especially above-board. While the Rooster’s career may be status quo, money is better than expected. People notice what the Rooster can do. It’s not an ideal year for pushing the envelope, and it’s probably better to continue with the same work. Love needs some extra effort but is fair enough. Friendships are similar: with some extra effort to maintain connections, they’re expected to fare just fine. It’s important to watch for discord, however. If managed well, things should resolve just fine, but it can easily get out of hand and lead to major misunderstandings if care is not exercised in the Year of the Pig. Overall, the Pig is a year of increased cooperation, but the Rooster and Pig don’t always “get” one another.
ROOSTER/CHICKEN in 2019:
Dog
(Born 1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018)*
Positive: Intelligent, loyal, fair, and constant. Dogs are always willing to listen to others’ problems, and to fight for a good cause.
Negative: Cynical, worried, and tactless. These people don’t always forgive easily, especially those who cross them.
The Dog is Yang Metal.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Dog:
The Year of the Pig is expected to be a rather stable year of building and development at a steady pace for Dog. With spending, changes are needed, and most welcome! Some tightening of the belt can improve your life, and ultimately, it feels good to be a little more disciplined. Overall, however, the energies of the Pig year can feel a little too slack for the Dog’s liking. Energy is on the lower side, and perhaps motivation for certain projects decreases. This can be considered good in that it evens you out. Even so, the year 2019 is expected to be quite strong for Dog’s social life. Increased happiness is possible in established couples, and decent opportunities if single. Generally, relationship status is not expected to change, but Dog is happier with this state than usual. Money is expected to be excellent, especially if spending is tamed as already mentioned, but Dog should watch for missing out on opportunities due to an especially cautious nature in 2019.
DOG in 2019:
Pig
(Born 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007)*
Positive: Gallant, kind-hearted, and sincere. Pigs rarely lose their temper and always try to avoid arguing.
Negative: Materialistic and pig-headed. These individuals have a problem saying “no” — to people, and to food!
The Pig is Yin Water.
Chinese Astrology Horoscope 2019 for the Pig:
This is a “reset” year for the Pig–a pinnacle year or turning point period. It’s also an especially busy time when circumstances seem to change. It can be a year in which there’s a significant new job, friendship, relationship, or simply a brand new attitude. Your social life is expected to be fairly good, although there can be some slack. More effort should go into maintaining friendships. The Pig’s love prospects in 2019, the Year of the Pig, are excellent.
PIG in 2019:
* Please note that if you were born in January or up to February 3rd, you are the sign of the previous year since zodiac signs begin on February 4th.
