Void of Course Dates this Month
Much astrological activity is concentrated in mid-April. First, Jupiter and Pluto form their second exact sextile in a set of three on April 14th, the first of which occurred on January 15th. The final Jupiter-Pluto sextile will occur on September 12th. This transit is powerful for nurturing our ambitions and favors business, the law, and commerce. We might enjoy increased influence, faith, and insight now. The desire for more personal significance can lead us to give of ourselves or motivate us to pursue personal or professional goals more ambitiously. The ability to sway or persuade increases. We might also take steps to better ourselves. We might solve a long-standing problem or capitalize upon a discovered resource.
Next, Mercury turns direct on the 15th. Mercury spent its retrograde (since March 22nd) in the sign of Aries. On April 1st, the Sun and retrograde Mercury meet, and this allowed the Sun to catch up with Mercury as Mercury was ahead of the Sun by degree since February. Symbolically, we may have been overthinking and getting ahead of ourselves, but now we feel caught up. Mercury is now direct (on the 15th) and will remain in its post-retrograde shadow until May 3rd when it reaches 16-17 degrees Aries — the degree at which it first turned retrograde on March 22nd. During these two weeks (from April 15th to May 3rd), we may be returning to recent decisions and conversations now equipped with a new perspective on these matters. Delays might lift.
Also on the 15th, the New Moon occurs in the first sign of the zodiac, Aries. With this new cycle, we are challenged to show a pure part of ourselves to the world. By acting upon our own inner impulses (constructive ones!) without fear, and by abandoning the need to refine these impulses based on what others might want us to do or what others think we “should” do, we learn more about ourselves. If we learn to depend on ourselves, we exude an all-new aura of strength that comes from personal integrity and confidence, as well as a pure and innocent charm. This New Moon aligns with Uranus, and we should make sure what we’re doing is a choice, not only a reaction.
On the 17th, Chiron enters Aries after spending over seven years in the sign of Pisces. We’re rebuilding our confidence, including body confidence, which are sensitive points now. Personal and health problems that have held us back come up for review. We’re learning to assert ourselves and focus on our own needs without feeling guilty during this transit. The concept that healing begins within oneself is emphasized during this cycle. Chiron will return to Pisces from September 25, 2018, to February 18, 2019, and then transit Aries until 2026/7. The year 2018 features Uranus’ transition out of Aries and Chiron’s transition into the sign.
Also on the 17th, Saturn turns retrograde and will continue to travel in this apparent backward motion until September 6th. While Saturn is retrograde, we tend to review our responsibilities and commitments as opposed to dealing with them in the moment. There can be more than usual experiences of guilt and self-doubt as we internalize fears but also the chance to reassess our commitments.
Pluto is stationary on the 22nd and turns retrograde. Pluto’s intense and complex energy hangs heavy in the air just a day after Mars’ station (Pluto is retrograde until September 30th), and we may be reassessing how we use our power. We are not as open about our desire for control or power, and some of us may be less in touch with it.
The Full Moon occurs in the sign of Scorpio on April 29th, bringing sudden awareness to our lives, particularly of relationship imbalances and flaws. Its harmony with Saturn suggests we have all the tools available to make constructive changes. This Full Moon reminds us of the need to consider others’ support, contribution, needs, wants, and input.

the Sun
The Sun continues its transit of Aries until April 19th, and we’re more assertive than usual, approaching our lives with dynamism and sometimes impatience. The Sun begins its transit of Taurus on the 19th, and we are in a building and acquiring stage. This is not a time for radical new visions and endeavors. Instead, we might concentrate on building and developing what we already have, and cultivating an appreciation for those things that last, sustain, and support.
Mercury
Mercury transits Aries all month, stimulating independent thought and bold, new ideas, but also rather impatient and sometimes insensitive communications. In fact, Mercury begins and ends the month at virtually the same degree of Aries. Mercury is retrograde until the 15th. The slower pace of retrograde Mercury in Aries can be frustrating, but it’s also a fine time for rethinking certain projects or ideas and learning more about what we truly want. Mercury remains in its post-retrograde shadow until May 3rd.
Venus
Venus continues its transit of Taurus until April 24th. This is a comfortable, content, and sensual cycle. It’s also a time for paying more attention to the value of things (and people). Venus does particularly well in Taurus as the sign’s ruler, but also this month as it forms trine aspects to planets in Capricorn: Saturn, Mars, and Pluto. These are resourceful, sensual, and powerfully attractive connections. Venus is curious and sociable, but possibly quite fickle as well, in the sign of Gemini, from the 24th forward.
Mars
Mars continues its transit of Capricorn all month, and we continue to pursue our desires with deliberation and structure. We are able to pace ourselves under this influence. Mars is in decent shape overall, as Mars is exalted in the sign of Capricorn. However, Mars is caught between Saturn and Pluto for most of the month, feeling like it’s between a rock and a hard place!) and can be defensive as a result. Mars aligns with Saturn on the 2nd — a time for considering the practical, realistic side of things. Mercury forms a square to Mars and Saturn on the 4-5, frustrating decision-making, communications, and learning. Mars ties into the Jupiter-Pluto sextile as it aligns with Pluto on the 26th and forms a sextile to Jupiter on the 23-24, fueling ambition.
