Our Review:
Planets in Solar Returns: Yearly Cycles of Transformation and Growth is an insightful, well-written book that offers tremendously useful information for anyone using Solar Returns in their predictive work.
The text begins with a chapter discussing the basic meanings of the Solar Return chart, and essentially discusses the topic, to precess or not to precess? Note that the author believes the Solar Return can be read as a stand-alone chart, and although comparing it to the natal chart offers more clues to the interpretation, these techniques are considered secondary.
The book discusses topics such as hemispheric emphasis, retrograde planets, and intercepted houses and planets in the Solar Return. The bulk of the book is devoted to chapters dedicated to each planet and luminary in the Return. Each planet and luminary is discussed in terms of its general significance in the Solar Return chart, as well as aspects to other planets, and its placement by house. The “double chart” technique of interpretation, as well as timing techniques are discussed in less detail.
This book delivers exceptionally clear, thoughtful, and thorough interpretations of the Solar Return chart itself. It is a fabulous “cookbook” for Solar Returns, and offers some valuable material that puts the Solar Return into the context of cyclesif the native stays in the same place from year to year, there are distinct cycles concerning the house placements of the Sun, for example. If the Sun is in the 10th house in one Solar Return year, the next year is likely to find Sun in the 7th. This connection is unique material and entirely useful. The idea of relating Solar Returns to each other offers readers the ability to look ahead for challenges and look behind for assets that can be brought into the present year. The author has an M.A. in Counseling Psychology, and this perspective is apparent throughout the book.
