Astrology Book Review: Ruling Planets
Author: Christopher Renstrom
Astrology Level: 1
Our Rating: B-
This is a lavishly illustrated, beautifully written book. What Renstrom attempts to do, and accomplishes well, is describe personalities based on one’s ruling planet — that is, the planet that rules our Sun sign. If you are a Leo, then you are a “Child of the Sun; if you are a Cancer, you are a “Child of the Moon”; if you are a Gemini or Virgo, you are a “Child of Mercury”. Besides offering tables for determing one’s ruling planet, each “child” is described in terms of personality traits. Variations on these general descriptions include, for example, Child of the Sun born under a solar eclipse; Child of Venus Retrograde; and so forth.
Part III of the book explains the refinements of the general descriptions with regard to the sign one’s ruling planet occupies. In the case of the Child of the Sun (whose ruling planet will always be the Sun, and therefore always in Leo), the refinement is the placement of the Sun by house. Otherwise, a Child of Mercury, for example, might have Mercury in Taurus, and a description of that position is offered.
Part IV is entitled Work and Play. This section offers compatibility analysis of the different “children”, with variations for different types of relationships like love interest, mate, child, parent, sibling, friend, enemy, boss, and colleague! This is unique and very readable.
Rich illustrations and very witty and warm text make this book a keeper. However, for intermediate to advanced students of Astrology, this book is best borrowed or leafed through. It doesn’t offer much in the way of advanced techniques. It does, however, offer a very fresh perspective on the signs, so it is certainly worth a read. Decide for yourself!
