When the Sun is square the Ascendant in the Natal Chart
Sun square Ascendant
With your Sun square the Ascendant, you may find that others perceive you differently than you intend. Particularly in your youth, you might be seen as having an attitude or even as arrogant. This could be a defensive response. In fact, being on the offensive could be your strategy, but it doesn’t always work for you.
For some reason, what you express is often interpreted the wrong way. Awareness of this discrepancy is vital. Otherwise, the defense mechanism can worsen over time, and you might face problems at work (especially with authority) and in personal relationships. Softening your manner and attitude in certain situations could do wonders to smooth over your various relationships.
You may very well have a love-hate relationship with receiving attention or recognition. Part of this complexity involves not always projecting the right image. Even when you want to keep a low profile, you could find that you stick out and get noticed.
However, you possess unique strengths that set you apart. You are highly self-sufficient and resilient, able to bounce back quickly from setbacks. You thrive on challenges, often finding them more natural to overcome than most people.
Notes on the square aspect:
The square, semi-square, sesquiquadrate, and opposition are called “hard,” “challenging”, or “inharmonious” aspects.
The square aspect is 90 degrees. In other words, if two planets or points are 90 degrees away from each other in a chart, they are said to be “square” one another. They are also said to “form a square.”
However, it’s rare that points are precisely 90 degrees apart. Astrologers allow orbs that help determine if an aspect should be counted as a particular aspect. For example, if we allow a 7-degree orb for a square, any two points falling in the range of 83 to 97 degrees apart from one another would be considered a square. Note that the closer they come to 90 degrees, the smaller the orb and stronger the square. The further apart they are from 90 degrees, the greater the orb and the weaker the square.
The square indicates great tension between the planets or points involved. Tension can stimulate action but can also translate into stress.
The planets involved in a square are acting at cross purposes. In this case, when pursuing the goals and expressing traits of the Sun, Ascendant energies and objectives can clash or disagree.
With squares, we may overdo it and run into countless obstacles before we “get it right.” However, squares force us out of complacency and get the ball rolling. Squares are often more problematic when we are young, as these aspects force us to grow and learn our lessons.
The Sun rules all that is “light” – the rational, conscious mind. The Sun is noble and righteous by nature. Clashing with the Ascendant, it can have a hard time expressing itself through the personal image.

General discussion of Sun-Ascendant aspects.
Notes on aspects of the Sun in the Natal Chart:
Due to how different cultures and generations teach children about gender roles, the Sun is often associated with the experience of the father or male figures in our lives.
In certain situations, women unconsciously assign their Sun qualities, including Sun aspects, to others, especially males. As a result, some women live their Sun aspects through their relationships with males, attracting these traits and qualities through them. ‘Owning’ their Sun means recognizing these qualities within themselves and consciously expressing them, rather than projecting them onto others. This can be highly rewarding in these cases. Of course, projection can happen for many other reasons, not only this one.
Similarly, in certain societies and cultures, men can be more likely to own their Sun and perhaps assign or project their Moon onto others. Identifying with the traditionally male Sun qualities may come more easily. As such, with a Sun-Ascendant square, for example, a male with this aspect may be more likely to live these qualities and identify with them.
Whatever the case, our Sun signs, houses, aspects, and conditions are our own, and it’s amazing work to explore them and discover ways to better manage or utilize their energies. For example, if you repeatedly meet people and circumstances in your life that express your Ascendant qualities and have a Sun-Ascendant square, working on incorporating these themes into your own life and identifying or owning these themes in your chart in mindful, productive ways, can be transformative.
Alternate interpretations:
Sun square Ascendant:
You often encounter negative reactions from others who are offended by you, even though you did not intend to be offensive. You can come on too strong, and no matter what words you are using to communicate, this causes others to doubt your honesty and sincerity. People do not react negatively to what you say or do, but rather to your attitude. You tend to blame others for their negative reactions and in general have difficulty looking at yourself and your attitude objectively.
If you want to win the approval of others, just be willing to openly and honestly be yourself. It is your tendency to “try too hard” that results in your apparent pushiness. Give others around you a chance to be the initiators in your relationships (at least sometimes). It is difficult for you to compromise, and you usually do so only when given no other choice.
The positive side of this aspect is that it gives you the ability to endure opposition and stress. You learned early in life that the best person to depend on for your success is you. You may tend to withdraw from others or to totally immerse yourself in your career pursuits. Try to see your “failures” as mere lessons in life rather than as catastrophes.

Sun square Ascendant:
“{child’s name} appears or comes across very differently than she feels herself to be at heart. If you read the description of her sun sign and compare it to the interpretation of her rising sign, you will note some basic inconsistencies or contradictions. Actually, she has both of these sides of herself, and she may sometimes feel frustrated or at cross purposes with herself due to this.
Other people are likely to be quite surprised to discover that she is really much different once you get to know her than she first appears.” — Interpretation sample from the Kiddie Gram report.
