Mercury Retrograde Periods in 2006
Although not quite as popular as Sun sign astrology, “Mercury Retrograde” has certainly become a buzzword–or buzz phrase–these days.
What is Mercury Retrograde? Three, and sometimes four, times a year, the planet Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky for a period of approximately 3 weeks. “Appears” is the key word here, because, technically speaking, no planet actually moves backwards in their orbits around the Sun. In fact, they don’t even slow down. Retrograde-station-direct cycles are essentially illusions that result from our point of view from Earth, simply because the Earth is also orbiting the Sun at a different speed than the other planets.
Mercury turns retrograde more frequently than any other planet. It can never be more than 28 degrees from the Sun, and whenever it reaches its furthest distance from the Sun, it changes direction.
As the planet of communication, Mercury retrograde tends to breed a certain level of confusion. Mercury rules our “lower” mind–how we perceive and interpret information that we receive from our environment, and how we relay that information to others.
Mercury has rulership over such things as speaking, negotiating, buying and selling, listening, formal contracts, documents, travel, the mail and shipping, and so forth. All of these areas of life are affected when Mercury is functioning in a sluggish state. Decision-making is challenged during Mercury retrograde.
Needless to say, it is not advised to sign contracts, engage in important decision-making, or launch a new business. Delays and challenges are more probable with Mercury retrograde. This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting.
During these periods, it’s best to check and double-check your work, emails, and paperwork. Watch what you say, because it may not come out, or be received, the way you intended. Try to be understanding if you receive remarks that don’t go over well. Double-check that the person who uttered those words really meant it the way you thought they did! Asking “are you sure you meant to say that?” might help.
Get in touch with yourself during this period–it’s an excellent cycle for discovering new ways of looking at life and at yourself. It’s also an ideal cycle in which to discover new ways of communicating your ideas and thoughts.

Venus Retrograde in 2006
What is Venus Retrograde? Occasionally, Venus appears to be moving backwards in the sky. Venus is Retrograde approximately 40-43 days every 18 months.
As the planet of love and values, Venus retrograde periods are times when we re-assess what–and who–we value. It is a period that most astrologers consider inopportune for getting married or starting a new relationship. Financial undertakings are not advised during this period as well. There may be delays or confusion in relationships and financial affairs. Read more about this Venus Retrograde cycle.

Outer Planet Configurations of Interest in 2006
In the first half of May, there is a grand trine between Jupiter, Uranus, and Mars in water signs. This configuration occurs at approximately 15-17 degrees of the water signs (Mars in Cancer, Jupiter in Scorpio, and Uranus in Pisces). Jupiter and Uranus form an exact trine 2 times in 2006on May 4th (at approximately 14 degrees of Scorpio and Pisces, respectively) and on August 29th (at approximately 13 degrees of Scorpio and Pisces, respectively). These configurations are opportunity periods, especially for people with personal planets or the Ascendant at 12-15 degrees of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Jupiter in Scorpio’s square to Saturn in Leo is exact on June 22nd at approximately 9 degrees of Scorpio and Leo respectively, and on October 25th at approximately 23 degrees of Scorpio and Leo respectively. Jupiter square Saturn is generally not a favorable influence for starting a business or new enterprise.
Saturn in Leo’s opposition to Neptune in Aquarius is exact on August 31st at approximately 18 degrees of Leo and Aquarius respectively. Saturn also opposes Chiron on February 20th at approximately 6 degrees, and on June 20th at approximately 9 degrees.

This is a broad time for taking that second look at what life seemed to offer, or that it claimed to promise. That doesn’t mean your life, specifically, but you’ll probably find that’s the current question in the air and there is good conversation in it at the least. The answers in general will be for the moment that optimism fails hopes lead to disappointment, and a lot of other confusions that result from both unclear desires and fuzzy thinking. If you can be on the outside looking into this one, you’ll be the happier for it. Unexamined expectations go before the fall, and where you can be a cushion to others and a shoulder to lean on, you’ll be the one to benefit from it later.

This is, in general, a period when it’s more all right to experiment with the unusual, pursue original approaches, and follow those flashes of insight however strange they might seem. Partially, it’s because what you might have thought strange not long ago now seems lucidly obvious and everyone wants a piece of the action. Now is not the time to recriminate or remind others of how unimaginative they recently were much better to acknowledge how ahead of the pack you were because, of course, you’re a natural leader.

This one-year-in-ten period is full of shifts and changes, struggles and dissatisfactions, confusion of purpose or profit in the world in general. If you didn’t think ahead and see this coming, you can find yourself rather at the mercy of changing storms. Although this may not affect you that much, it’s affecting the general populous, so expect shifting sands on a regular basis. This applies not just to economics, but to disagreements about the very makeup of moral fiber, right and wrong, which side you are on, and so on. Don’t go for an easy fix, as a good one probably won’t be available. The wise are waiting, not wading in.

31 Aug Saturn opposition Neptune 4:53 AM EDT Tran-Tran 17º Leo 53′
This approximately year-long period, which everybody shares once every 36 years, puts a backdrop of considerable deception and collusion in government circles followed by exposure and consequences. The Watergate conspiracy and the covert rise of the Nazi military machine come to mind. The fact that people can be so false and so blind at the same time naturally affects all and suffuses cultural morality and trust at a fundamental level. On a personal level, it means cover your rear and don’t rely on what you hear, especially from the most normally reliable sources. What you don’t know probably will hurt you, so check twice, and then again. Everybody’s in the same boat.

Faith, optimism, and a yearning to explore all kinds of new horizons: these are some of the focal points in your life at this time. Travel, education, and other ways to stretch your horizons open new doors of opportunity. Religious, philosophical, and cultural matters are likely to have special appeal for you now; transmitting ideas on a broader scale brings gain.
